Songs I Like - What Am I Living For? (Mark-Almond Band)

"I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and indeed, all is vanity and grasping for the wind."
Ecclesiastes 1:14

The Mark-Almond Band is easy to confuse with another popular musician from the time: Mark Allman from the Allman brothers. But while the Allman Brothers are southern rockers, Mark -Almond is jazz, the kind of smooth sexy jazz that lulls you to contented relaxation like swinging in a hammock on a summer day in the shade. Mark-Almond was very influential in their music and style, but is largely unknown in the US. Their European sales were better, but they never were a huge stadium-filling act.

What Am I Living For is a song that asks the most basic question of human existence. What is my purpose, why am I here, why am I even alive? To what end to I live, where do I go from here, and why? It's the question adults ask when they are mature enough to face life alone, put down the toys, and think about what they are doing. This is a frightening question, and the song does not give the answers. It examines various options and leaves us with the singer sitting alone and wonder why and what. It's too easy in our culture to avoid this question by a whirl of entertainment and amusements; leaving us prey to those who would manipulate and lead us around.

What are you living for?

Well I said to my best friend, can't you see what a mess I'm in?
My daddy he taught me to drink whisky
But my momma she died from a-drinkin' gin

My brother, he works in a coal mine, works so hard to get his pay
My sister, she believes in sweet lord Jesus
And she's waitin' for redemption day

What am I livin' for?
Why am I living, why am I giving all my life
To bring up a family, children, and wife
Tell me my friend hasn't that been done before?

I remember my first job, I was singin' with a band
Every payday came around
I'd take my money from the man

He said "Now spend it wisely, boy, or save it while you have the time"
But I got drunk on a stand
And I blew the band
Now I'm standing in the unemployment line

What am I livin' for?
Why am I living, why am I giving all my life
To bring up a family, children, and wife
Tell me my friend hasn't that been done before?

I had me a sweet woman, mine until the sun don't shine
I came home one morning, early
And I found her with a friend of mine

It's not so much I needed her
But oh, God, how to stay away
I packed my bags, and I hit the road
And I've never seen her to this day

What am I livin' for?
Why am I living, why am I giving all my life
To bring up a family, children, and wife
Listen my friend, its been done before

Thanks a million for printing the words to "What am I Living for" by Mark-Almond! I had never even heard of the band before today. A few minutes ago I was channel surfing through XM radio ("Deep Tracks" on DirecTV) and they were playing that song. I can't believe it took me 34 years to hear such a fantastic song (from 1973). Thanks again for taking the trouble to publish the lyrics.

Such a charming fellow.

You're right, the Allman Brothers never had a member named "Mark" Allman, I'm sorry I wrote that so poorly. I was simply noting the similarity of names and the potential confusion.

Right. No need to be a jerk about it.

BTW: The Allman Brothers may be credited with creating Southern Rock, but if you listen to their live improvisation, starting on the Fillmore album, their influences were Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman and John Coltrane, to name a few. In 1969, those southern boys were playing jazz way before the advent of jazz-rock fusion.

Right. There was a Duane Allman and a Gregg Allman in the Allman Brothers, but more notably was Marc Almond who was in Soft Cell and who was popular enough to push the "Mark-Almond" band into the backseat.

The Mark-Almond band was great and the above is still one of my favorites of theirs... Thanks!

I've loved this song since my teens. Existential and deep, and the delivery was soulfully expressive. Joni Mitchell affected me similarly with songs like, "The Last Time I saw Richard"...Dark inspires me to be my best Self. Like Viktor Frankl.

I too have loved this song forever so I bought The Best of Mark-Almond. But it has a slower version . . .not the one I prefer, which includes "I said Hey . . [then the chorus] what am I living for. Maybe I'm looking for a live version. Any help? Thanks all.

I agree -- I would lie on my bed as a teenager and listen to this song; wondering if it all will make sense some day.

I now make my living as an existential hero -- what a twist of fate.

I've had these lyrics tumbling around in my head since the mid 70's. I used to have the album on an 8-track tape. Anyway, I had some bad news today and the lyrics immediately came to mind. Thanks so much for posting them.

The name of the band is the Marc- Allman band. First album live in 1970, (rare spanish release) next studio album 1973. The band named after the two leaders John Marc and Jon Allman (nothing to do with The Allman Bros.Band or Cher) HA-HA. Go to KSHE-95 St. Louis MO. Real Rock Radio for more info.

Take a close look at that album cover before you figure the band was called Marc-Allman.

Oh last night I slept in the open,

Down by a Redwood tree.

Yes last night I slept in the open,

Just to let, just to let, just to let my soul roam free...

One of the best pieces of music from the '70s.
